RACING Men’s Green Dial Watches
Origins of British Racing Green
If you’ve ever wondered why British racing cars are famously green, there is in fact an interesting connection to Ireland!
In the early 20th century, races were between countries rather than individuals. Media tycoon James Gordon Bennett Jr. organised one such race. Each country could enter three cars each and the winning country hosted the event the following year. In 1902, the British won the race for the first time in a Napier. Consequently, we were due to host the race the following year. However, there was a considerable snag: at the time the speed limit on British roads was only 12 mph.
The organisers of the race were instead welcomed by Ireland (where no such laws existed) and consequently as a mark of respect for their Irish hosts, all three British cars were painted shamrock (Irish) green. It was this shamrock green that paved the way for what we now know as British racing green. Read more here. Therefore, what better colour than green to connect Racing Watches to their historical roots?

The new Citizen Promaster Bullhead Racing Chronograph AV0076-00X pays homage to a retro 1973 Citizen Bullhead model. With its crown and pushers on the top of the case, the watch resembles the head of a bull with horns. This style first started to appear in the 60’s and 70’s and gives this newly modernized version a unique and on trend look. Furthermore, it is a Limited Edition of 1,973 pieces to reflect the year the original watch was released.
Firstly, with a hand assembled movement, the Citizen Promaster Bullhead Racing Chronograph features a 1/5 second flyback chronograph and alarm. Instantaneous flyback means that the second-hand flies back to zero and instantly starts counting again when the flyback button is pressed. Secondly, the watch also features a tachymeter, power reserve indicator and date. Additionally, the combination of green on the dial with the black and red of the chrono sub dials and hands adds to the retro look of the watch. Furthermore, simple luminous hour, minute hands and hour markers ensure that the dial is legible at all times.
With great attention to detail, the way the leather strap fits around the case is quite unique to this model. In a nod to its 70’s predecessor, the strap appears almost moulded around the case with even the pushers and crown set into it. In black perforated leather to increase air flow, it is green on the underside and has green contrast stitching. Finally, a stainless-steel folding buckle with push button release ensures the security of the watch. Presented in a special green Limited Edition box, it is priced at £695.
Best Racing Watch Under £3,000
Finally, for something really special, the Frederique Constant Vintage Rally Healey Automatic Chronograph is a Limited Edition of only 2,888 pieces. A “must have” timepiece for any vintage car enthusiast, it reflects the DNA of this iconic British brand.
With a sleek 42mm case in polished stainless steel, the dial has enough space for maximum readability. In classic green, the chronograph counters are a contrast in white. Additionally, the applied indexes are coated with a luminous material for improved legibility. Moreover, the second and counter hands are bright red which gives a bold splash of colour to the dial. The green leather strap has perforations to increase air flow to the wrist whilst racing. This design cue is taken from vintage racing watches and driving gloves. In addition, the red contrast stitching also complements the red hands. Finally, a convex sapphire crystal protects the dial.
Equipped with a 25 jewelled automatic FC-397 chronograph movement, the Frederique Constant Vintage Rally Healey has a power reserve of 46 hours. A see-through caseback also ensures that the movement can be appreciated by the wearer. Presented in a beautiful box, it even comes complete with a model of the Vintage Rally Healey that inspired it.
