Introducing: Seiko Prospex Alpinist 2021 European Limited Edition

The highly anticipated Seiko Prospex Alpinist 2021 Limited Edition has just landed. Exclusive to Europe, just 2,021 pieces are available.

Why is Seiko Alpinist so popular?

Alpinist has a loyal following amongst Seiko enthusiasts for it’s great value for money, history, dependability and pared-back rugged styling.

What is the History of the Seiko Prospex Alpinist line?

Seiko Prospex Alpinist men's limited edition automatic watch with brown leather strap model SPB201J1Alpinist was first launched in 1959 exclusively for the Japanese market. However, the line became so popular amongst Seiko fans that it was launched globally. Created for Japanese ‘Yama-otoko’ mountain men, the Alpinist was designed to be reliable in treacherous terrain. Today, Alpinist comes under the Seiko Prospex brand. Also, it has naturally been upgraded to modern specifications including a sapphire crystal and increased power reserve of 70 hours.

Known for their iconic rotating inner compass ring, Alpinist is the perfect choice for anyone who enjoys outdoor pursuits such as orienteering. In 2020, Seiko expanded the Alpinist range with the introduction of a number of models with a smaller case without the compass ring. However, the Alpinist 2021 Limited Edition sees a return to the full-size case and compass ring.

At first glance, the combination of a grey dial with a brown strap is not one I’ve ever seen before. It’s certainly not a regular pairing. However, when you bear in mind that the watch is inspired by a mountain sunset, it makes a lot of sense. Think swirling mists, grey mountains and rich, earthy tones underfoot. Personally, I think it works because the dial is a dark tone in a matt finish and because the strap is also in a rich, dark shade of brown.

Case, Dial, Compass Ring, Leather Strap

Firstly, in brushed stainless steel, the 39.5mm diameter case is robust and strong. Secondly, the dark grey dial has applied silver tone arabic figures and hour markers. Seiko Prospex Alpinist men's limited edition automatic watch with brown leather strap model SPB201J1Additionally, Lumibrite on the hour markers ensures the dial is legible and easy to read. Similarly, the cathedral-style hands are also coated in Lumibrite. Furthermore, the inner rotating ring displays a compass which is adjusted using a second crown located at 4 o’clock. Moreover, splashes of orange and white on the compass ring enhance the mountain sunset feel. Furthermore, the main screw-down crown is located at 3 o’clock and is protected by the case that surrounds it. Additionally, a date window at 3 o’clock is a useful feature and benefits from a magnifier in the sapphire crystal.

Finally, a dark brown calf leather strap with secure folding clasp completes the look. Additionally, over-stitching near the case adds a vintage touch.

Movement

Equipped with an automatic 6R35 calibre movement, the Seiko Prospex Alpinist 2021 European Limited Edition is accurate to +25 to -15 seconds per day. Also, it is water resistant to 20 bars (200m).

About the Author: Suzie Brooks

Watches have been in my life for as long as I can remember. Growing up, my dad was an Area Manager for Seiko in the 1970s and 80s. It was a job that he loved and in fact, just a weeks before I was born, dad was in Japan with his team at Seiko. Later, we had a family retail jewellery business in London. I spent hours sitting behind the counter helping out when it was busy and became the Buyer and General Manager when I left uni. In the early 90’s we started our own watch distribution company for the UK and Ireland. For over 25 years we were the sole distributor for Michel Herbelin plus a number of other famous names. Having experience both as a retailer and a distributor has definitely given me a 360 degree view of the watch industry! I’m passionate about affordable luxury watches. I love the quirky and interesting, but mostly I appreciate great design.
