Just Landed: Bulova Limited Edition Lunar Pilot Chronograph 2021
The 2021 Bulova Limited Edition Lunar Pilot Chronograph celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 15 mission and lunar landing.
David Scott’s Original Bulova
Based on the watch famously worn to the moon by Astronaut David R. Scott in 1971, it is the only privately-owned watch to make space history. Scott wore his Bulova on the 3rd EVA (extra vehicular activity) of his Apollo 15 mission. When he broke the Hesalite crystal of his officially issued Omega, he was given permission to use his own personal watch. Known as “the other moon watch”, Scott’s original Bulova was auctioned in 2015 with a sale price of $1.6 million.
High Frequency Quartz Chronograph Movement
Bulova’s modern interpretation of the Lunar Pilot Chronograph watch has a proprietary high-performance quartz movement. With a frequency of 262 kHz, it operates at a higher frequency than most quartz or mechanical movements. Consequently, it has increased precision (8 times more accurate than a standard quartz). Moreover, the six-hand 1/20 Second chronograph measures up to 60 minutes.
Case, Dial, Strap
Firstly, with a 45mm case in durable Titanium with gold tone stainless steel detailing, the Bulova Lunar Pilot Chronograph is a sizeable watch. However, with gently curving case contouring, it is comfortable to wear. Secondly, the gold tone chronograph pushers follow the shape of the case. This is true to the original watch and is a nice detail. Additionally, the grey dial is multi-level which adds depth. Also, a tachymetre scale surrounds the outside edge. Moreover, in keeping with the original, the Bulova logo is the version from the 70’s. Turn the watch over and the gold tone commemorative caseback is engraved in relief with an astronaut and details of the historic mission. Finally, a grey leather NATO strap secures the watch to the wrist.
