Introducing: Seiko Prospex Black Series 2022
For 2022, Seiko Prospex continues its Black Series with the introduction of four Limited Edition watches. Now in its fourth year, the Black Series is always a highly anticipated launch. With a stealthy, black aesthetic, the Black Series are modern re-interpretations of three milestone models in Seiko’s illustrious history: from 1965, 1968 and 1970.
Inspiration for the Black Series: Night Diving
For many divers, diving at night is a completely different experience to diving in the day. The vast ocean becomes even more mysterious with only the glow of diving lamps to show the way. Consequently, the black cases of the Black Series with orange accents on the dial and bezel, evoke the dark, silent ocean and orange lamp light which illuminates each night dive.
Black Series Limited Editions 2022
5,500 individually numbered pieces are available of each model, with just 1,000 of the world view bracelet version.
A fabric strap unites the first three watches (SPB253J1, SPB255J1 and SPB257J1). In brown polyester with black hardware, it incorporates the traditional Japanese braiding technique of Seichu. Additionally a black silicone strap also accompanies each watch in the presentation box. Equipped with a 6R35 calibre, the three Black Series models have a 70 hour power reserve.
The SLA061J1 world view model has a black stainless steel bracelet. Unlike the other three, it is equipped with a 8L35 calibre with 50 hour power reserve. This calibre was designed especially for diver’s watches by the watchmakers at Shizukuishi Watch Studio in northern Japan.
Let’s explore each watch in turn and discover the milestone behind each heritage design.
1965 Re-interpretation |
The 1965 Black Series Limited Edition SPB253J1 is a modern re-interpretation of the 1965 Diver’s Watch. Seiko’s first diver’s model, this 150m water resistant automatic watch was also Japan’s first ever diver’s watch. Also, it proved its reliability in the harshest conditions when used by the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition from 1966 to 1969. The 2022 Black Series modern creation SPB253J1 has a 40.5mm case with a slim profile making it ideal for daily wear.
1968 Re-interpretation | SPB255J1
The original model released in 1968 was groundbreaking, with 300m water resistance and a 10-beat automatic movement. The new 2022 Black Series SPB255J1 that is based on it retains the sharp, powerful design of the original. However, with a smaller 42mm case diameter, it offers comfort on the wrist.
1970 Re-interpretation | SPB257J1
Launched in 1970, this diver’s watch with a unique streamlined form was worn by adventurer Naomi Uemura between 1974 to 1976 when he completed a 12,500km solo dog-sled run from Greenland to Alaska, thus proving its reliability in extreme conditions. Nicknamed the “Willard” by fans after Martin Sheen’s character in ‘Apocalypse Now’, the modern 2022 Black Series watch retains the same iconic, flowing shape with protected crown. However, the water resistance of the new SPB257J1 model increases from 150m to 200m and the glass material is now sapphire.
1970 Mechanical Diver’s Modern Re-interpretation |
Also based on the iconic 1970 “Willard” Diver’s Watch, SLA061J1 has dial pattern that expresses the texture of sand on the sea bed. An orange seconds hand adds a subtle, quiet accent. A five row metal bracelet creates a sharp look. As per the other three models, a silicone strap is also supplied in the presentation box.
