Introducing: Bulova Avigation Hack A-11 – “The Watch That Won the War”
The Bulova Avigation Hack A-11 is a new introduction with a fascinating story to tell. From Bulova’s archive series (which draws on heritage pieces from the brand’s back catalogue), it’s based on the iconic A-11.
Issued to the U.S. military during WWII, the unassuming A-11 was dependable, rugged and easy to use. However, it was its ability to “hack” the seconds that was its most recognisable feature. For groups of soldiers to synchronise watches, they would pull out the crown and stop or “hack” the seconds hand at 12. Although commonplace today, this was a new, innovative feature in the 1940’s.
Although the A-11 wasn’t the only watch worn by Allied soldiers, it is arguably the most iconic. Known as “The Watch That Won The War”, tens of thousands of A-11 watches were made. With a 32mm case, highly legible dial, large crown and comfortable strap, the A-11 was a utilitarian timepiece that was simultaneously tough, easy to use and comfortable to wear. Intended as a navigation timepiece, many thousands saw service as such during the war by USAAF crews.

Today, Bulova’s launch of the new Avigation Hack A-11 pays homage to the original watch. Although Bulova has introduced modern versions of the Hack in the past (most recently the 98A255), the new A-11 is a departure in terms of styling.
Firstly, a blue dial replaces the usual monochrome colour pallette. The white luminous numerals and hands remain as an integral part of the DNA of the “Hack”. However, a bright red seconds hand adds a vibrant touch. Secondly, the case diameter is slightly smaller at 37mm (the 98A255 has a 38mm case). Also, it has a distinctive coin edge.
The caseback replicates the ‘Military Spec’ information from the original A-11: a must for any collector.
True to form, the strap is a comfortable choice. A brown nylon NATO, it has polished steel hardware to match the case.
Finally, as with other Bulova Hack watches, the A-11 also features an automatic movement (Miyota 82S0 3-hand movement with hack feature) boasting a 42-hour power reserve.
