The MONDAINE watch collection, first introduced in 1986, is now regarded to be one of the “10 top Classic Swiss Watch Designs” and its presence in modern art museums underscores its status as a cultural icon and a testament to Swiss design excellence. Mondaine watches owe their distinct look to the design of the Official Swiss Railways Clock. The design was created by Swiss Engineer and Designer Hans Hilfiker in 1944. In the mid 1980’s, Mondaine company owners – the Bernheim family, obtained the licence to produce a wristwatch version of the famous design. Mondaine watches are still made under this licence today and are known as the Official Swiss Railways Watch.
The iconic Mondaine style is recognisable by the red second hand and plain monochrome dial. The hour and minute markers are chunky and give the dial a graphic look. However, whilst the brand has stayed true to these design roots, the collection has evolved over the years. Some key milestones include the launch of the the Evo line in 2001. Also, the introduction of the unique Stop2GO model in 2013. Additionally, 2017 saw the launch of innovative BackLight technology to allow good visibility of the hands at night.
Mondaine is one of the first entirely carbon-neutral watch companies in the world with a commitment to sustainability stretching back over 30 years. Furthermore, carbon neutrality extends to all areas of its business. This includes the factory, watch components, packaging, waste, power, water and business travel. Moreover, a huge photovoltaic system on the factory roof, use of hydroelectricity at its headquarters, a reduction in the volume and weight of packaging and the use of eco-friendlier materials in its packaging, casings and straps have all had a positive impact on the company’s carbon footprint.
In 2017, Mondaine launched what is probably the world’s most sustainable watch collection: ESSENCE. Firstly, the case is made from 70% natural raw materials, namely from the oil of the wondertree plant and glass powder. Secondly, no straps in the ESSENCE collection are made from leather. Instead, they are made from wondertree oil or recycled PET bottles. Also, the underside of the strap is lined with natural cork. Even the packaging of the essence models consists of more than 96% recycled PET bottles. Additionally, the packaging is designed to be repurposed as a case for a mobile phone or eyewear.
