Oris began making pilot’s watches in the 1910s at the dawn of aviation and has pioneered in the field ever since. The Big Crown, one of Oris’s signature designs, was first introduced in 1938, and continues to inspire the collection today.
The Big Crown ProPilot offers function-based design at its most successful. The collection is full of pioneering watches, aimed at pilots who value the ProPilot’s cockpit-ready functionality and aesthetic.
The ProPilot X Calibre 400 follows in a long line of Oris pilot’s watches going back to the early 1900s. However, its power lies beyond its associations: it’s a mechanical joy machine. Inside the ProPilot X Calibre 400 is one of Oris's new generation of high-performance automatics.

Oris is a Swiss Watchmaking Company that produces only mechanical watches. Established in 1904, today Oris pushes the boundaries of watchmaking with technological advancements and cutting edge design. Also, the brand is Climate Neutral. Through its ‘Change for the Better’ campaign, Oris aims to drastically reduce its carbon footprint over the next 3 years.
The story of Oris Watches begins in 1904 when company founders Paul Cattin and Georges Christian buy an old factory in the Swiss town of Hölstein. The company quickly expands to include 6 additional factories in the locality. By 1925 Oris also own their own electroplating factory in Herbetswil. At this point, the company begins to convert their pocket watches into wristwatches, by altering the side attachments.
Following the death of Georges Christian in 1927, Oscar Herzog, Christian’s brother-in-law, takes over as General Manager. Herzog steers Oris through the many watchmaking highs and lows of the coming years including a diversion to alarm clock production during WW2. The company builds a reputation of being supportive to its vast number of employees by building housing near their factories. They are also one of the first employers to offer equal opportunities to both men and women.
The Oris watch company, despite all changes and adaptions over the years, have proved themselves to be innovators in the world of horology. They use their own Calibre 601 movements in their automatic watches with a power reserve indicator. Other notable in-house movements include the Oris Calibre 652, which due to its high level of accuracy was awarded full chronometer certification by the Observatoire Astronomique et Chronométrique.
In 2020, Oris launched the Calibre 400. Raising the watchmaking bar, the new movement has a five-day power reserve (120 hours), is highly resistant to magnetism and comes with 10-year recommended service intervals and a reassuring 10-year warranty. The 400 series movement is now being rolled-out into key models across the Oris collection including the Aquis, Big Crown and ProPilot.
