Bulova Archive Series MIL-SHIPS-W-2181 Special Edition
The Bulova Archive Series MIL-SHIPS-W-2181 is a Special Edition based on a 1957 prototype that was never commercially launched. Consequently, this is the first time Bulova enthusiasts have the opportunity to own this special timepiece.
Moisture Indicator
Originally conceived for the U.S. Navy, the MIL-SHIPS-W-2181 watch has some unique features. Firstly, a paper strip on the dial indicates if moisure enters the watch and changes colour if the 200m water resistance ever starts to fail. Secondly, the bezel will only rotate if it is pressed down.
Case, Dial, Crown
At 41mm in diameter the stainless steel case is in a matt finish. Additionally, it has a domed anti-reflective sapphire crystal which is an upgrade from the original prototype. However, in many ways Bulova have remained faithful to the original design. In particular, the black dial has the same beige and white hour markers. These are luminescent to ensure that the dial shines brightly in the dark. Moreover, Bulova have even kept the same lettering on the logo as the original. The insignia on the screw down crown is also a retro “BULOVA” rather than the modern tuning fork.
Diver
With a water resistance of 20 bar (200m), the Archive Series MIL SHIPS Watch is not a watch for the professional diver. However, it is suitable for showering, snorkelling and swimming and is ideal as a sports watch. Moreover, its historical links to the U.S. Navy make it a really intersting piece and perfect for channelling that retro vibe. Discover more about the Bulova Archive MIL SHIPS Watch in our article.
Bulova
Bulova is an American brand with a history of innovation. Founded in 1875 by Joseph Bulova, there are many examples of the brand’s pioneering spirit. These include developing the world’s first fully electronic watch with tuning fork technology (at the time the most accurate watch in the world), collaborating on 46 NASA space missions and making America’s first radio and television commercials. Since 2007 Bulova has been owned by Citizen. The brand continues to innovate. In 2010 they launched the Precisionist Collection with a continuous sweeping second hand. Additionally, in 2016, Bulova launched Curv, the world’s first curved chronograph movement.
