Who was Max Bill?

Max Bill was one of the most distinctive designers of the last century. An architect, sculptor and product designer, he studied at the Bauhaus in Dessau. His association with Junghans began in the 1950’s when he was commissioned to design a kitchen clock for the company. In 1961, Max Bill started to design purist watches for the brand and Junghans in turn, ensured that the watches were at the cutting edge of technology.  Max Bill is acknowledged as one of Europe’s greatest timepiece designers. He constantly strove for clarity and precision in his designs. Today these same values are still evident and underpin the entire max bill collection from Junghans.

With the latest generation of radio-controlled movements, the max bill MEGA fits into the legendary line perfectly. The design is minimalist and has remained largely unchanged by Junghans since 1961.

Radio-controlled manufacture movement

The max bill MEGA is equipped with a J101.65 radio-controlled manufacture movement which powers the hour, minute and second hands as well as a handy date function. The movement guarantees absolute accuracy at all times as it receives the signal of the time signal transmitter on three continents. Outside of reception range it continues to function with the precision of of an especially precise quartz movement. Expect correct date changing at all times as the display also shifts automatically from the last day of the month to the 1st day of the following month when the watch is in quartz mode, or when there are 30 or fewer days in the month. The second hand also has a double tick which places a focus on precision when reading the time.

Purity of design

This max bill MEGA watch has a stainless steel 38mm case with a large dial opening so you see less of the bezel and more of the dial. After all, the time is the most important feature of any watch and so Max Bill deliberately pared the case back to it’s simplest form.

The domed hard plexiglass accentuates the historical charm of the watch. Coated with sicralan to ensure scratch-resistance, it is practical too. Underneath, the minimalist dial is matt silver-plated with black printed hour and minute markers which give the watch the graphic look which is so typical of the max bill collection.

The leather strap is in a bold blue colour which provides a clean contrast to the dial.
