Meister Calendar Moon Phase

The Meister Calendar Moon Phase Watch from German brand Junghans is all about the finer details. At first glance, the timepiece has a very classical look. However, it is attention to the smallest design elements that makes this a thoroughly modern watch.

Fine details: case and dial

As with all watches in the Meister collection, inspiration comes from the original Anton Ziegler designed watches of the 1930’s. Case sizes tended to be smaller in years gone by so the Meister Calendar Watch is brought up to date with a 40.4mm case in gold PVD coated stainless steel. The overall look of the case is stunning. A side view of the case shows you that the case is bowl shaped as the caseback tapers away and the glass is domed. Therefore although although the overall height of the case is 12mm, it feels like a much slimmer watch when on the wrist. This also makes it comfortable to wear.

The watch has a convex, hard plexiglass coated with sicralan to ensure scratch-resistance. Underneath, the dial is in a matt silver plated finish and the gold tone hour and minute hands are coated in an environmentally-friendly luminous substance to allow visibility in poor light conditions. The hour and second hands are curved at the ends, a beautiful design feature which allows them to follow the contour of the domed dial. The markers on the dial are a mixture of applied, polished gold tone indexes (at 12, 3, 6 and 9) and printed markers. The printed hour markers and printed minute track give the watch a graphic look which is reminiscent of the Junghans Max Bill watches.

Movement and calendar functions

The movement is an automatic calibre J800.3 with a 38 hour power reserve. This powers the hour, minute and second hands as well as a day indicator at 10, month indicator at 2 and a large calendar indicator which also has a Moon Phase. The detailing of the day and month windows is attractive. Rather than just cutting the dial away to reveal the window, the windows are set into a framework created by the dial to give them emphasis without the need for them to be too large. The main feature of the dial is the calendar indicator which is scalloped into the dial in an inverted dome. This detail is quite unique to Junghans and creates a lovely, clean aesthetic. At the top of the calendar indicator, there is an elegant Moon Phase window in midnight blue and gold.

Caseback and leather strap

On the underside of the case, the watch has a screwed exhibition caseback which allows you to see the intricacies of the movement. There are also 4 push buttons on the underside of the case which enable you to set the day, month, calendar and moon phase functions.

The strap is made from Horse leather and is in brown with stitched sides and a gold PVD coated stainless steel pin buckle. 21mm in width, the strap is shaped to hug the contour of the case ensuring there is no gap.
