The Oris 80th Anniversary Edition Big Crown Pointer Date is a special edition commemorating 80 years of this iconic watch. Presented with a bronze case and with a green dial, no watch tells the historic tale of independent Swiss watchmaker Oris quite like the iconic Big Crown Pointer Date. A potent symbol of Oris’s philosophy, some say that without it Oris might not enjoy its current status as a leader in Swiss Made mechanical watches. In 1938, Oris introduced a pioneering watch for pilots. It had an oversized crown so that glove-wearing airmen could easily adjust it, and an unusual complication – a date indicated by a central pointer hand.

Bronze Case, Dial, Date, Crystal

Firstly, the bronze case is a functional 40mm in diameter and has a distinctive fluted edge. Bronze patinates over time which gives the case a lovely, old world charm. Secondly, the dial is in a natural heritage green which along with the cathedral style hands, adds an elegant touch. It also has bold, arabic figures and hour markers. Along with the hands, these are coated in superluminova for legibility in poor light. Additionally, a traditional minute track ensures the dial is easy to read. The pointer date hand has a red tip and points to the date at the extreme edge of the dial. Finally, the sapphire crystal is domed on both sides. An anti-reflective coating on the inside reduces glare for better legibility in the cockpit.

Movement, Water Resistance, Caseback, Bracelet

Equipped with a precision Oris 754 automatic movement, the watch has a 38 hour power reserve. In addition it is water resistant to 5 bars (50m) and has a large easy grip screw-down crown. As per the original, this is oversized to allow for use when wearing gloves. Similarly, the see-through caseback also screws-in and allows a fantastic view of the movement in action. Finally, the leather strap is deliberately plain with no stitching and it’s dark tan tone complements the bronze case.
