Oris Big Crown Pointer Date Calibre 473

The Oris Big Crown Pointer Date Calibre 473 starts a new chapter in the story of this iconic watch. Introduced in 1938, the Big Crown Pointer Date has been in constant production for more than 80 years. The original had two distinctive design features. Firstly, an oversized crown that could be operated by gloved airmen. Secondly, a central hand that pointed to a date scale around the edge of the dial. With the new Calibre 473, the Big Crown Pointer Date has a hand-wound in-house Oris calibre inside it, for the first time in decades.

Calibre 473

Calibre 473 is Oris’ tenth in-house movement in 10 years. This special movement has a five-day power reserve with an indicator on the reverse. Also, it’s highly anti-magnetic, and comes with a 10-year warranty and 10-year recommended service intervals (as does the watch).

Moreover, Calibre 473 took four years to develop. Without a rotor, the power reserve indicator is visible through the watch’s sapphire case back.

Case, Dial, Date, Crystal

The stainless steel case is 38mm in diameter with a polished bezel (unlike other Pointer date models the bezel is not fluted). The dial is blue with straight hands which give the watch a more modern feel. Also, arabic figures and hour markers are bold and clear. Along with the hands, these are coated in superluminova for legibility in poor light. Additionally, a railroad minute track ensures the dial is easy to read. The pointer date hand has a red tip and points to the date at the extreme edge of the dial. Furthermore, the sapphire crystal is domed on both sides. Moreover, an anti-reflective coating on the inside reduces glare for better legibility in the cockpit.

Water Resistance, Caseback, Strap

The Oris Big Crown Pointer Date Calibre 473 is water resistant to 5 bars (50m) and has a large easy grip screw-down crown. Similarly, the see-through caseback also screws-in and allows a fantastic view of the calibre 473 movement in action. Finally, a brown leather strap secures the watch to the wrist.
