This Parachute Elastic Grey Watch Strap with Orange Stripe is based on the famous straps worn by the French Navy or ‘Marine Nationale’.
Origins of the Marine Nationale Strap
Issued with Tudor watches without straps in the 1950’s, the Marine Nationale’s combat divers, or nageurs de combat, had to innovate. Creatively repurposing the elastic straps from their reserve parachute bags, these elastic straps were flexible, resilient, and comfortable over a wetsuit. Also, the metal elements on the parachute bag were similarly repurposed for the strap’s hardware: the keeper and hook clasp.
