Seiko Prospex ‘Dark Depths’ GMT 1968 Divers Modern Re-Interpretation

The Seiko Prospex ‘Dark Depths’ GMT reinterprets the 1968 Diver’s watch. The 1968 model was Seiko’s inaugural high-beat diver’s watch and accompanied the first ascent from Japan to Mount Everest. Indeed, the success of the 1968 model laid the foundation for Seiko’s innovative Diver’s watch development over the next sixty years.

Movement, Case, Dial, Bracelet

Firstly, the new in-house Calibre 6R54 powers the Seiko Prospex ‘Dark Depths’ GMT. With a 72 hour power reserve, it’s the first of Seiko’s diving watches to have a GMT function. Secondly, the 42mm stainless steel case feels comfortable on the wrist due to its contoured edges. The black dial is legible even in dim light with its bold, luminous hour indexes and hands (view green dial version here). Additionally, built for wearability: the bracelet fits comfortably due to its low centre of gravity and short-pitch. Furthermore, a three-fold clasp secures it to the wrist and an extender ensures it can fit over a dive suit. In terms of durability, the bracelet has a hard coating to minimise scratching. Also, the diving scale on the bezel is made from high-quality scratch resistant Japanese ceramic.
