The Seiko Prospex “Tuna” 1000m Divers Watch is a professional diver’s watch suitable for saturation diving. Due to the larger diameter and bold case shape like a tuna can, the watch has been affectionately nicknamed the “Tuna” by Seiko fans.
Case, Dial, Strap
Firstly, in a 2020 watch industry first, the case is made from Seiko’s “Ever-Brilliant Steel”. This is more corrosion-resistant than in most luxury watches. Consequently, it is only usually used in the marine industry. Secondly, with an imposing 49.4mm diameter, the watch is designed with high visibility in mind. Additionally, a black uni-directional bezel surrounds the dial with bold, Lumibrite coated indices. Similarly, simplified high-visibility hour markers and hands coated in Lumibrite make the dial legible and easy to read under water. Furthermore, the black silicone accordion strap is durable and practical. A strap design invented by Seiko in 1975, it is a practical solution to the expansion and contraction of a diver’s wrist at different depths. Finally, a day and date indicator at 3 o’clock is a useful addition.
Water resistant to 1000 m/3300 ft, the “Tuna” has a screw caseback. Additionally, it has a screw-down crown which is located at 4 o’clock for safety reasons when diving. Equipped with a quartz movement, it has a battery life of approx. 5 years.
